Percy Jackson Sea of Monsters

Colchis Bull. Final approved designs for the movie “Percy Jackson Sea Of Monsters” 2012.
It’s the Year of the Ox so I though I share.

Original design was done by my friend Bryan Wynia . At the time I was working on it, I was only told that it came from the Aaron Sims Company, Years later I found out Bryan designed the original concept.
My job was to take the design further, make it more realistic, working with the director and the animation department. In the beginning I had to design all of the points of articulation in the Bulls body. The original design was not very clear (for the animation department and modeling) how the legs would bend and plates collapsed, for the joints to move on the neck, elbow, and back legs. It had to be a fully functional robot, & had to make it very clear for the rest of the departments how it worked. We did a test using the original design’s proportions but we found that the legs were too short 😅and it did not look good from an animation point of view. So, we decided to give it the proportions of a real Spanish bull which change the design drastically. I also helped design the back & front legs, part of the head, eyes and some of the mechanics of how it’ll opens and closes, also the heat VFX. Many other artist also worked on it like Nick Pugh, he designed the interior skeleton and interior mechanics & flamethrower, and Martha designed the patterns on the outside (forgot her last name😬). I worked on this design for a period of about eight weeks from 2012 In 2013. Also many other people worked on it in the visual development department, modeling, texturing, lighting, rigging. So, in the end it’s all a team’s effort and 1 person can’t take sole credit for the final product. It takes an army. Cheers 🍻

Original design was done by Bryan Wynia in 3d based on a drawing by Jerad S.Marantz.
Team work.
